The song “White Men Landing,” written by JKS faculty Junior Burke, can be heard on Janet Feder’s new album Songs with words! Listen to the track here.
Junior Burke is a novelist, dramatist, and lyricist. His novel, Something Gorgeous, which explores the world behind Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, will be republished in 2012. A set of his first studio recordings tentatively titled With You in Rockland, is being readied for release; he has also been commissioned to contribute original material for an upcoming stage production in Michigan. He has taught at the Kerouac School since 1999, originated its MFA Creative Writing (low/res) degree program, and served as Chair of Writing & Poetics from 2006 to 2010.
A native of Boulder, Colorado, and currently residing in Denver, guitarist, composer and teacher Janet Feder performs original compositions for prepared acoustic guitar. What likely is most distinctive about her work regards the fact that her solo pieces are stories composed (as opposed to improvised); that she utilizes combinations of prepared and nonaltered strings to effect sounds, rhythms and tones not normally associated with the guitar to explore and expand the sonic regions of the instrument. Janet has taught private guitar instruction, music theory, guitar master classes and seminars for more than fifteen years regionally and nationally.
