Open and Extensible to “Insanely Great;” or, What it Could Have Been Like to Use Your Computer: A Talk with Lori Emerson

Lori Emerson will give a talk which uncovers the cultural and technological shift that made way for contemporary digital interfaces (especially the iPhone/iPad multitouch interface) that are closed off to creative experimentation.

The Fourth Annual Neal Cassady Birthday

The Bash features readings, music, poetry and a special performance by David Amram, a close friend and collaborator of both Neal Cassady and Jack Kerouac.

Octogenarian musician and composer, Amram’s integration of jazz, ethnic, and folk music has led him to work with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Willie Nelson, Langston Hughes, Leonard Bernstein, Bob Dylan, Arthur Miller, Pete Seeger, Hunter S. Thompson, Johnny Depp and many more. Amram will also perform at Dazzle in Denver on January 29th.

Others appearing at the 4th Annual Neal Cassady Birthday Bash include: Neal Cassady’s son Robert Hyatt, slam poet Leah Scott, Swallow Hills’ Scott McCormick, Beat scholar Hugh Bingham, author Jon Leslie, songwriter C.P. Carrington, and writer and performer Chris Shugrue from the Jack Kerouac School at Naropa University. The Bash is free, open to all ages, and will be hosted by Denver Beat historian Mark Bliesener.

Poetry Arcade: An Exhibition of the Work of Jason Nelson

This will be the opening night of an exhibition of digital artist and poet Jason Nelson’s work, which takes the form of video games that allow the player/reader to unlock poetic and theoretical messages. Nelson will Skype in for a talk and Q&A starting at 8:30 p.m.

Deer Pile Poetry Reading featuring: HR Hegnauer, Mathias Svalina, and Sara Renee Marshall

HR Hegnauer is the author of Sir (Portable Press, 2011). She is a book designer and website designer specializing in working with independent publishers as well as individual artists and writers. HR is a member of the feminist publishing collaborative Belladonna*, and she’s part of the poets’ theater group GASP: Girls Assembling Something Perpetual. She received her MFA in Writing & Poetics from Naropa University.

Mathias Svalina is the author of three books, most recently The Explosions from Subito Press. He is a member of Team Octopus.

Sara Renee Marshall grew up in the Southwest. She is an editor for The Volta and Noemi Press. Recent poems can be found in places like OmniVerse, CutBank, SpringGun, Octopus and Colorado Review. Her chapbook, AFFECTIONATELY WE CALL THIS THE HOUSE, is forthcoming from Brave Men Press. Sara lives and writes in Denver, Colorado.
